Covering Boxes

Finding Big Enough Paper

I am desperately trying to source the right kind of paper for covering boxes.

I have tried wallpaper but this is too thick and some gift wrap is too thin.

Any paper I do find is too small. I may want to cover a large box or a small box, round box etc.

I would be grateful if you could point me in the right direction. The designs I am interested in are soft stripes/spots/pastels/petals/victorian roses/contemporary patterns.

Many thanks,

Tracey

I assume you are decoupaging the boxes.

I think for large boxes, gift wrap is really the best choice.

Any other large patterned paper I can think of (shelf paper, wallpaper) is heavier weight.

In my opinion, plain old copier paper is the best weight for decoupage for smaller projects. Not only do you preserve the original design to use again but also you have a fallback in case of any problems.

You can print copies of your design at home with an inkjet or laser printer or take the originals to a copy center.

If you need larger pieces of paper go to a good office store. You should be able to get prints up to 12 x 14 inches - maybe even larger in some of the larger copier centers.

For really large size prints, you can try places that copy blueprints. The size limit for these copies is quite large.

If you use inkjet copies, I recommend sealing the ink with three coats of Krylon Crystal Clear spray before gluing and sealing. Inkjet ink is prone to bleeding when moistened.

Here is an example of a larger decoupage box which I covered using inkjet printouts.

I printed the landscape running around the box three times and pieced the strips together. The seams are imperceptible.

Some stores (Hobby Lobby, for one) use newsprint-quality paper as tissue paper for wrapping fragile objects. It's newspaper size and printed with lovely floral designs. Maybe they could offer a lead on where to get it.

Thank you Peggy. Gift wrap tissue paper is especially good to decoupage onto non-porous surfaces like glass.

Here's a glass plate which I decoupaged with gift wrap tissue.
