Craft Business Tips
Craft Business Tips for a New Mom
I am a single mother of a 4 year old son.
Today while I was just searching the web for ideas on starting a business from home, your page came across.
I love doing crafty stuff, I love doing flower arrangements and I am also very good with the sewing machine. I thought you may be able to give me some direction.
Thanks and God bless,
Andrea
I think it’s neat that you’re focusing on what you enjoy doing to help you find some direction in starting a home-based business, because that’s the kind of business you can really stick with and put your heart into.
Most people look for a "get rich quick" scheme - and that’s just what they usually are - schemes.
I encourage you to read more on our site about the business end of crafting. It’s really quite comprehensive. Most of it will be very relevant to you because my home-based craft business began with computer graphics but progressed to sewn items.
Go to For Profit and check the table of contents. You will find many articles to help you get started, including my answers to questions similar to yours.
When I added sewn items to my product line, I had to carefully manage inventory and plan order fulfillment (which takes more time for sewn than computerized items).
However, some of my biggest sellers to date have been sewn items such as Panadieres (fabric bread baskets) and Tote Bags or Ponchos that fold up into little pouches. You’ll find them for sale on the site.
Finally, flower arrangements (both real and artificial) are very marketable and have many tie-ins. Not only do people purchase them for their homes and for gifts, but floral arrangements are in demand for events like weddings, birthdays and formal dinners.
Think about who could use your floral arrangements in events they are planning, be they individuals planning special events or other small businesses that do so.
My sister-in-law (of whom I’m very proud) started a home-based business doing tablescaping. She designs theme tables for special events!
I wish you luck and would love to hear how everything turns out.
