3D Heartily Hybrid Card

How to Make A Pretty Multi-Purpose Card

3D Heartily Hybrid Card

I killed two birds with one stone on this project. It's a birthday card for a friend whom I love dearly and my submission for Creativer Dreamer June's February Creativity Prompt, which was LOVE.

Doncha just love when you can do that? The card template was a $1 special from Jessica Sprague.com. The Heartily card template is by Linda Roos of In the Making Design.

The card would have been easier to make straight from paper, rather than digital to paper, but you know me - I'm a digi-girl. With scrapbooking papers it would be easier to play around with various combinations and assure proper placement.

You can see what I mean in the printed pieces below. It was difficult to tell how the heart would line up over the cardstock because of the gatefold design.

The Photoshop layered file has a ton of layers for maximum flexibility. The first thing I did was put them into groups and label them: 3D Heart; Card IS; and Card OS. Then I saved it to the original file name and saved a second version as simply Heartily.psd.

In my second version, I even merged a few of the pieces. For example, I don't think I would ever want to clip different papers to the two sides of the heart. Same for the pretty glittery brads which trim the edge of the two heart halves.

How to Make the 3d Card

Design. Print. Cut. Score the gatefolds and the tabs of the heart pieces - I used my Scor-It-All Mini, but any scoring tool will do. Crease firmly along the scored lines.

For the 3D effect, curl the heart halves around a small bottle or fat marker to give a bit of a roll to them. Use a pen or pencil to roll the outer edges in the opposite direction, creating an "S" curve.

Apply glue to the back of the heart tabs and press onto the gatefold edges, making sure the two heart halves are perfectly aligned.

This is optional. Any paper glue would do; but I used adhesive dots to glue the outer edges of the heart down and give a little extra pop to the 3D effect.

Finally, I used tiny little nail art brads to mimic the digital brads running around the inside edge of the heart. Placing three of them in a row on the right side adds more 3D effect as well as balances out the large green leaf on the left.

I used Scrap Girls products by Cheryl Barber (Glass Beads Style) and Keri Schueller (papers from the Beaute Botanical kit); plus two time saving scripts from SpeedScraps Christy VanderWall (Supply Tracker and Copy Close) to create this pretty card.
