Decoupage Christmas Ornaments

Using Decoupage Techniques on Christmas Ornaments

Teddy Bear Ornament

Decoupage Ornaments

Decoupage Christmas Ornaments Materials

  • Plastic ornaments
  • Sheet of Christmas-themed tissue paper
  • Mod Podge decoupage medium
  • Scissors
  • Sponge brush
  • Water and paper towels
  • An egg carton or paint palette with wells as a drying rack
  • Hooks or clips to hang the ornaments between sealing coats

Instructions

Small Christmas Ornaments Photo Cut out your decoupage images. You can cover the entire surface or let some of the ornament show through.

Using your fingers, apply Mod Podge to an image. Position it and smooth from the center out to remove bubbles and make the paper conform to the rounded ball.

Repeat process with the rest of your images. Set the ball on the drying rack.

Use the sponge brush to apply sealing coats. Hang to dry between coats.

Two or three coats are usually sufficient. Check drying progress every 15 minutes. Since the ball is not flat, decoupage medium may run a bit.

Smooth it out with a moistened finger.

More Decoupage Ornaments

This version of decoupaged ornaments uses cocktail napkins for the images. The thin napkin tissue conforms better to the rounded shape than gift wrap tissue paper used in project two but it’s more delicate to handle.

Materials

  • Plastic ornaments
  • Christmas-themed cocktail napkins
  • Mod Podge decoupage medium
  • Scissors
  • Sponge brush
  • Water and paper towels
  • An egg carton or paint palette with wells as a drying rack
  • Hooks or clips to hang the ornaments between sealing coats

Instructions

Cut the images you want from the napkins. It is easier to cut all layers together because they have more body. Then peel away the plain tissue backing.

Some napkins have two layers of backing. Be sure you have a single layer before gluing your design.

Because of the delicacy of the tissue, I found it easier to apply Mod Podge directly to the ornament using my finger, then gently lay the image in place.

Smooth the tissue over the ball. If you missed some spots and more Mod Podge is needed you can add it now. Since the napkin tissue is absorbent the Mod Podge will soak right through.
