How Can You Become a Craft Apprentice?

Learning Crafting From An Established Crafter

Hi,

Loved your website.

I am really interested in crafting or designing, but before starting any projects, I feel I need more experience. Since we just moved to Dallas, Plano I don't have any circle of friends to guide or join me.

But I would love to work as an craft apprentice or assistant, side by side, as this is my passion and dream.

If you know of anybody let me know.

Ruby

Most crafters that I know work alone, usually in their basement or garage, specializing in one or two things. They generally don't have craft apprentices.

However I have heard that there are crafters who do employ apprentices. The problem is finding one near your home that uses the techniques you want to learn.

If you want to apprentice you might consider contacting local art schools or the Art Department at local colleges to see if anyone has such a program, but you might have to be enrolled as a student in the school to be eligible.

I would suggest you take some courses in crafts that interest you. Local adult continuing education programs run by the school district might offer one or two craft courses as might your community college. You might find a crafter looking for an apprentice that way.

You could try running ads in publications likely to be read by crafters or posting notices on bulletin boards in craft stores.

Go into some of the online craft forums to see if you can locate a program that way.

Most craft stores offer free courses in various crafts. Going to classes will not only introduce you to other crafters, but also get a "circle of friends" going.

You can also learn from books and videotapes. There are lots of training materials on the market right now.

There are also plenty of materials available regarding the business end, many of which are contained in the "For Profit" sction of my website.

I will post your letter on my website and let you know if anyone responds. But I think the best thing for you is to follow the Nike ad "Just Do It!"

[If anyone knows of a craft apprentice program or opening in the Dallas area, please send me an e-mail and I will forward it on.]
