Finding Work for Your Craft Business
Business Is Not Hard to Find
Business is Where You Find It
I was struck by this thought a few days ago.
Ever since then, the song "Love is Where You Find It" has been running through my head. I mean the 1940s version written by Nacio Brown who wrote dozens of songs for Broadway musicals including "Singin’ in the Rain" and "You are my Lucky Star".
Don’t be blind it’s
All around you
Everywhere."
Well, business is where you find it too. "Don’t be blind it’s all around you everywhere."
Or at least that’s been my experience in the craft business. And once you find it and your niche; business will start finding you.
Even though I closed my little shop "Eileen’s Gifts" in March to concentrate on my website and blog, craft orders continue to come to me.
This is a testament to the fact that I really did my homework when I decided to quit my day job in finance and craft for profit. I analyzed my market. I surveyed friends and strangers BEFORE I decided what crafts to take up.
I started with decoupage, sewing and paper crafting. Then I expanded into beaded jewelry and wire sculpted jewelry. I dabbled in polymer clay and dry embossing; and then fell in love with digital graphics.
I tried several other things that I quickly dropped because I didn’t find a ready market for them AND because my customers were pulling me toward what THEY wanted.
If you’re thinking of taking the plunge into crafting for profit, analyze your market before you start AND constantly as you go along.
The market changes; fads come and go. You may find yourself pulled by the market in new directions as I did. Don’t resist; pay attention to your market and go where it takes you.
