Special Events Craft Business

Ideas on Starting a Different Kind of Craft Business

Hello. I was doing a “business ideas” search and came across you website. I like your site a lot.

I see that you have put a lot of time and effort into setting it up.

I myself do several different types of crafts from baby shower gifts, wedding shower gifts and last year I made all the wedding party bouquets and boutonnieres etc.

I would like to start my own home-based business and want to know if you think that I could actually make money doing these types of things.

I read how you got started, but I don't recall if you ever mentioned what product(s) you actually started doing.

So all that said, what do you think?

Thank you for your time.

Audra

In short, yes I think you could make a successful business providing craft products for special events, especially if you live in an area where such events are common occurrences.

Are there banquet halls that are booked year round? Are there lots of couples having babies? I’m not being facetious.

I, for example, live an in area comprised largely of retirees. So there aren’t many baby showers or weddings here and my product line is geared toward adults and tourists.

Do some market research to get a feel for how large the potential market for your crafts is. The For Profit section can help you work through the business planning steps.

In the Meet Your Market section, you’ll read about two market conditions: demand-pull; and supply-push.

You, lucky girl, seem to be in a demand-pull situation! You haven’t set up a business yet, and people are already asking for your products.

I was also in a demand-pull situation and my story is similar to yours. I started doing something I enjoyed and was drawn into doing it for profit by friends and strangers who saw my work and wanted to buy it or commission something special.

My first media was computer graphics and that’s still my “first love” as far as crafting goes. My other main product lines are sewn items (like tote bags and gift bags), beaded jewelry and wire-sculpture.

As for whether people will pay you to do special event work – absolutely. Many are so frazzled when they contemplate planning a big event that will create wonderful memories, they are more than happy to pay professionals to relieve some of their stress and assure the high quality they desire.

You’ll enjoy the story of how my sister-in-law, Jill, grew a successful Tablescaping business because of the similarities to what you want to do.

You see, it can be done!

P.S. Did you notice that The Artful Crafter has a whole section on Party and Wedding Planning? We really didn't plan it that way, but we got lots of questions about making party favors, invitations, etc.

Wow great things for me to think about.

I'm working on a web page and that is taking longer than I expected. I'm very short on money these days so I don't have a problem doing it myself, but it's more time consuming than I thought.

I also have a 4 & 5 year old at home and my 16 year old is moving back home with his dad this coming week. I want so much to get this started and with the weather changing it will start to get busy in the summer.

I will definitely look more at your web site.

So far this is the BEST site that I have come across that give the crafter etc to get motivated to get things going. You have made me more excited to get things moving quicker.

I do love crafting and time will always be an issue but you have alot of great ideas and instructions on lot of ideas. I'm very thankful for your website.
