Decoupage Fabric to Flower Pots
Smooth Waterproof Decoupage Finishes

Decoupage Fabric onto Flower Pots
Yes You Can Decoupage onto Flower Pots ... or Just About Anything
I want to decoupage flower pots using fabric. I want to use a sealer that has a smooth, kind of thick, professional looking finish. What would you recommend?
I am at my wits end trying to figure this out. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Heather
If you were working on a flat surface, poured epoxy would give a thick smooth glossy finish. Since your surface is not flat, there are more limitations.
Many coats of a thin decoupage medium could be built up to a certain thickness; or a couple coats of a heavy decoupage medium could be used. One caveat: decoupage media are water - resistant, not waterproof.
If you will be planting live plants in the flower pots, you'll also need a sealing topcoat. When the decoupage medium is completely cured, spray two or three coats of clear acrylic like Krylon Crystal Clear.
Many Thin Coats
Using a very thin decoupage medium will show fewer brush strokes in the end but be very time-consuming. You need to allow several hours drying time between coats and then a couple of weeks for complete curing before finishing with the acrylic topcoats.
A Few Thick Coats
It's difficult to eliminate brush strokes entirely with a thicker medium. Use a foam brush applicator rather than a bristle brush. You will only need two or three coats to get a thick finish. Allow each coat to dry overnight. Allow three to four weeks for curing before spraying on the sealing coats.
I prefer Liquitex Super Heavy Gel for most decoupage projects. It can be thinned with water up to 25% to apply many thin coats. If used full strength, follow the tips for a few thick coats. It is especially suited to your project since you'll need a heavy glue medium to adhere the fabric to the pots.
