Decoupage Clay Flower Pot

Special Media for Pots That Will Hold Live Plants

Deco Art Patio Paint

How do you keep the Mod Podge decoupage material from bubbling when you place a plant inside the clay pot after decorating it with fabric and Mod Podge?

Is there another type of glue to use instead of Mod Podge?

I would like to use small fabric squares left over from a quilt project.

I have 21 young 2-6 year old children that I will be working with on this project for mother's day.

That's an excellent question. I've seen various decoupage clay pot projects on the internet clearly intended to hold live plants; and yet most articles don't mention the moisture issue. Plants love moisture; finished decoupage projects do not!

Seal the clay pots inside and out, making sure to cover the top rim and the rim of the bottom opening as well.

DecoArt Patio Paint is a good choice to seal the pots and is readily available. It's designed precisely for such surfaces as terra cotta, ceramic bisque, masonry and stucco.

It's water-based. It both paints and seals the surface. I think white or cream would make a nice background for the fabric decoupage. If you want to preserve the terra cotta color, there's a clear coat Patio Paint. Let the paint dry thoroughly before proceeding to glue on the fabric for decoupage.

As a decoupage medium, you can use Mod Podge Outdoor which is more weather resistant than the original version.

Personally I prefer Liquitex Super Heavy Gel because it reaches a harder cure and is more resistant to moisture. You can thin the gel with water if desired; but keep in mind that the thicker the fabric, the more decoupage media will be required.

I'm sure these will make darling little flower pots that will delights the moms!
