Decoupage Medieval Engraved Glazed Tile Cross Pendant
Using Decoupage to Create Authentic Looking Pendants
For this medieval cross pendant, I took a photo of a friend’s 7th century antique solid silver wall plaque with a medieval-style engraving of Christ on the cross.
The pendant I made using the photo is 4 inches tall and 2 ˝ inches wide.
I was delighted when it came out looking like an engraved glazed ceramic tile.
I was going for metallic!
Decoupage Cross Pendant Materials:
Image to be decoupaged
Foam backing board (as is used for framing pictures)
Embossing stylus (or ball point pen which is out of ink)
Sponge brush
Seam ripper
Jeweler’s pliers
Medieval Cross Pendant Instructions
Cut out your cross image with scissors and use it as a template to cut the foam board backing with the craft knife.
Paint each side of the foam cross silver and set aside to dry.
Affix the image to the front of the foam cross with Mod Podge. Smooth out bubbles and let dry.
With the stylus, “engrave” the design. Use more pressure on the main outlines and less on the details.
Decoupage the front of the cross with at least two coats of Mod Podge using the sponge brush. Allow each coat to dry before applying the next. Decoupage the back of the cross in the same manner.
Use the seam ripper to make a hole at the top for the jump ring.
Apply gold leaf to the edges following package directions.
Insert the jump ring and close it with the pliers.
