Decoupage an Angled Glass Plate
How to Insure a Perfect Fit Everytime
Hello - I recently started decoupaging glass plates and have run into a problem.
The plates I use are square with an edge that curves up. I am able to decoupage little images well and remove all air bubbles, wrinkles, etc - but when I put on the large background paper (large enough to cover the entire back) I'm left with many wrinkles.
Do you have any advice in how to minimize this problem?
Another problem I'm noticing is even though I cover the paper I'm decoupaging with glue, for some reason I'm getting streaks when it's dry (shiny areas that look like no glue was on that piece).
I hope my descriptions make sense and you can offer some advice!
Jennifer
If I understand correctly, the plate has angles. Therefore the backing paper needs to be cut exactly to these contours before gluing it down. You want a perfect fit with no sections doubled over.
You can make a template using lightweight paper. Center the paper over a plate. A dot of glue stick glue can be used to stabilize it while you work.
Smooth one side of the paper down over the curved edge and trace how to cut the two corners. Do this on the other sides and cut out your template.
Make sure the template covers the entire plate with no overlap.
This is a technique that is amply illustrated in Durwin Rice's beautiful how-to book, New Decoupage.
The streaks sound like they are due to using insufficient decoupage medium.
Here's a tip from Durwin's book that may help. Durwin uses decoupage medium mixed 50/50 with wallpaper paste and applies it "by the handful". You can always squeeze and wipe away excess but, as you know; there's no way to get more in once you've laid down your design. Good luck!
