I am working on ceramic (clay) pots. I paint them with a weatherproof clay pot paint.
I then used Mod Podge Matte to decoupage my pictures onto the pots.
I do three to four coats of Mod Podge Matte and the last coat I do is
Mod Podge Outdoor.
I am wondering if that is sufficient enough in order to weatherproof these pots. I want to use them to put plants in and leave outside.
Will the steps I'm taking be enough, considering that the Mod Podge Outdoor is for exposure to weather, OR should I finish with an additional sealer of some sorts, and if so what kind?
Many thanks,
Darrell
To quote Plaid, the manufacturer, “Outdoor Mod Podge is water resistant and is most durable when used on projects that are in a sheltered area.”
Better safe than sorry.
I recommend you finish off the pots with two coats of Golden MSA Varnish. MSA is a mineral spirit acrylic-borne resin formulation and contains ultraviolet light stabilizers to protect your artwork from fading in the sun.
MSA Varnish forms a tougher, less permeable film than waterborne acrylic emulsion varnishes. It is easier to apply since the mineral emulsion self levels and inhibits foam and pinhole formation.
Omit the Outdoor Mod Podge. Pre-seal your work with an isolation coat of Krylon Crystal Clear Spray Varnish to seal the decoupage images away from the varnish and prevent possible ink bleed.
