Decoupage Bathroom Wall Tiles

Decoupage Finishes for Wet Areas

Hello,

I am remodeling my bathroom.

From my travels I have some wonderful photos that I would like to decoupage onto tiles. Can these tiles then be used in a tiled shower?

If so, what process would you recommend?

If not, could they be used elsewhere in the bathroom?

Thanks for your assistance.

Best Regards,

Susan

I don't recommend decoupaged tiles for the shower where they would be subjected to direct streams of water day after day.

If you buy any decoupaged furniture, the seller will tell you to treat it with appropriate care. For example, wipe up any spills quickly and do not set drink glasses on it.

I think decoupaged wall tiles would be safe elsewhere in the bathroom as long as the room is well-ventilated and you take care to open windows or turn on fans when the room gets steamed up.

Plaid makes an Outdoor Mod Podge and cautions, "Outdoor Mod Podge is water resistant and is most durable when used on projects that are in a sheltered area.

Note the use of the phrase "water resistant" rather than "waterproof".

You might want to consider Liquitex Gloss Medium and Varnish in place of Mod Podge. I'm using it more and more for my decoupage projects because it reaches a harder cure.

If you want a higher gloss (tile-like) look, finish the decoupaged tiles with Liquitex Soluvar Final Picture Varnish.

It is available in a spray which makes application and clean-up very simple; but there's also a brush-on version if you prefer.

Here's an article I wrote on Decoupaging Photos that provides more information.

Here is a list of all decoupage related articles on The Artful Crafter.
