Decoupage Trivets
Decoupage That Can Stand Up to Heat
How to Safely Decoupage a Trivet
Dear Artful Crafter,
I am keen to decoupage some cork mats and would like to know if once they are finished it would be safe to put hot pans on them or will this damage the surface of the mat?
Thank you for any advice.
Mary-Anne
Yes, I'm afraid that heat would damage the decoupaged surface. I don't know of any decoupage medium that can stand the heat.
Even the two-part epoxies designed for table and bar tops warn against placing hot items on the cured finish.
However I have a suggestion for you. You can buy nicely finished clear glass tiles that are designed for use as trivets from National Art Craft.
The company assures me these tiles are heat resistant and will stand up to holding hot pans and dishes. [ I would not put them in the oven. They are heat resistant; not heat proof. ]
Decoupage your images to the back of the glass tile using my directions for decoupage under glass. Then glue the cork on the back.
To disguise the layer edges, you may want to add metal leaf or some other heat-resistant edge like metal foil tape.
Read about how to apply metal leaf here.
