Decoupage Under Glass

Painting Glass for a Decoupage Project

Hi... I love your site.

I would like to know what type of paint I should use to paint a background on a glass plate.

I am trying decoupage under glass. I have my print all in place and have sealed the whole plate with Mod Podge. I hope it will turn out.

Thank you for your reply.

Judith

You got a bit ahead of yourself by sealing the images with Mod Podge before all your design work was done. But no matter. Since Mod Podge dries clear and is water-based, a good latex or acrylic paint will adhere just fine.

Two or three coats should give you the opacity you need. Allow at least two hours between coats. Let the plate cure overnight after the last coat.

If any paint seeps under the glass edge while drying, it can be removed carefully with a sharp razor blade or craft knife. You can run a medium nib gold pen around the edge for a nice finishing touch if you like.

The last step is to seal your work with two or three coats of Mod Podge. If the plate is just for show and will be hung on the wall or placed on a stand, you're done. However if you plan to use the plate, for example as a cake plate or to serve hors d'oeuvres, I recommend one more step: two coats of water-based polyurethane for durability.

I'm sure your decoupage plate will be lovely. Good luck!
