Decoupage Short Cuts: a Spice Jar Set

Decoupage Spice Jar Labels

Decoupage Spice Jar Label Materials

  • Jars to be decoupaged
  • Digital or scanned artwork
  • 1 white full sheet inkjet label
  • 1 clear full sheet inkjet label
  • Mod Podge
  • Sponge brush
  • Clear spray enamel

I came up with a new technique on this project that I would like to share.

Despite following decoupage expert Kay Davies' tips on preventing ink bleed, I have frequently been bedeviled by inkjet ink bleeding and smearing when I try to seal it.

I wanted labels for my spice jar and kitchen canister set that would match the trim tile in my kitchen.

So I scanned one of the tiles and created a perfect match.

Visit tips for scanning 3D objects for complete instructions.

I put all twelve spice jar labels and four canister labels on one 8.5 by 11-inch page in Print Shop and printed them onto a full sheet white label.

I covered the white label sheet with a full sheet clear label.

Voila! No need to seal. No more smeared ink.

Another advantage of using self-stick labels is that it saves the usual first step in a decoupage project which is to glue the artwork onto the project base.

No need to wait for that first coat to dry!

Completing the Decoupage Project

Cut out the labels; peel off the backing and attach labels to your jars.

My spice jars are round, so I lined them up in a row and placed objects on both ends to prevent them from rolling around. If you need to do this, just be sure the decoupage medium doesn't run down between the jars and stick them together!

I like a sponge brush for decoupage because it leaves fewer brush strokes and can't deposit any bristles onto my decoupage. Let dry thoroughly between each coat. Three coats should be sufficient to assure the edges are leveled enough to prevent them getting snagged on something and lifted up.

Since Mod Podge turns milky and tacky when moistened, even after curing, spray two or three coats of clear enamel over the decoupage to protect your work and make the spice jars easy to keep clean.

Hi there.

I found this project when I googled "spice jar labels". I am so happy to find it as I have been looking for a project like this for quite some time.

I have a source for the bottles - but I haven't been able to find a spice rack like the one pictured in the project.

Do you have a source for the rack itself.

Thanks.

Melissa
