Decoupage on Plastic
Can Your Decoupage an Outdoor Plastic Table?
Hi.
I hope you can help me.
I want to decoupage a large plastic table top that sits in my lanai. We live in Florida.
Will it ever dry? Will the heat harm it? What type of glue do I use.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
Elaine
You can decoupage on just about any firm surface. You may want to rough up the plastic a bit first with sandpaper. This will give it some "tooth" with which to grab and provide a tight seal.
Yes, it will dry but you will need to be patient and allow extra drying and extra curing time. In a drier climate, four hours is the average drying time and about two days are required for the glue to cure.
For your Florida humidity, multiply those numbers by three. You can speed the process by doing your decoupage in the air conditioned portion of your house, rather than on the lanai.
Be sure to protect the table from dust and not to get it wet during drying and curing.
Will the heat harm it? Not anymore than it would harm other furniture you leave on the lanai.
Treat it as you would a wood table rather than a plastic one, for example wipe up spills quickly and always use coasters.
