How to Weave a Diamondback Garland for Your Homecoming Mums
There are two Homecoming Mum Love Chains referred to as “Diamondback”.
One is three-dimensional, so I refer to it as the Diamondback Braid Love Chain. You can find instructions for it by clicking the link above.
The other Diamondback Love Chain is flat, so I call it the Diamondback Garland. The Diamondback Garland copies the well-known method for weaving chewing gum wrappers together, so you may already know how to do it.
Cut strips of ribbon in your school colors equal to the ribbon’s width times eight. My ribbon is ¾ inches wide, so I cut my strips six inches. It takes 20-¾” wide strips to weave one foot of garland.
Step 1:
Take a strip and fold the ends to the middle; fold again at the middle so that the ends are hidden inside. Take a second strip and fold in the same fashion. Interlock the two folded strips by sliding one into the other as shown in the third photo. Then pull it taut.
Step 2:
Fold another strip, slide it in and pull. Now you can see how the chain locks together as you go. Decide which end will be the beginning of the chain; double it over and secure with a paper clip.
Step 3:
Just keep going until you reach the desired length. Double the other end and staple. Remove the paper clip from the beginning of the chain and staple it as well.
Staple the love chain between the backing plates of your Homecoming Mum corsage.
