Tuesday, August 12: Make a Very Personal Gift with Scrap Girls Products

I took on a Scrap Girls challenge to scraplift one of designer Paula Wright's Layouts.

I chose one titled "I Scrap Because" and twisted that to "Al Hikes Because".

I had just received 25 photos from our friend Al of his recent hike in Temperance State Park, Minnesota. I sent back this gift memento of his hike.

Al is of the Wilson clan and the vertical strip on the left of my layout is the Wilson tartan.

The journaling says:

"Al hikes because he can.

He hikes for the beauty, the serenity
and sometimes for the solitude.

He hiked the arduous 2175-mile
Appalachian trail in one season.
No mean feat for someone
half his age.

This year it's the 22-mile
Temperance State Park trail
which runs along the North
Shore of Lake Superior - a
mere ‘walk in the park'.

I would say it's the hardy
Scot in him. Al would say,
‘Aaay laddie!'"

and on the crumpled journal strip, a quote I found on the Park's website ...

"The Temperance River was said to be the only river
along the North Shore without a sand ‘bar'
at its mouth; hence the name." Cute.

This layout was done in Adobe Photoshop. I used Segoe Script and Georgia fonts and Scrap Girls products from the following talented graphic designers: Melissa Renfro, Valerie Randall, Keri Schueller, Shalae Tippetts and Thao Cosgrove.

The composite photo frame, the crumpled scrap of journal paper, the stitched tear strip and the cute canteen were all gifts from Scrap Girls that came in the newsletters.

Tuesday, August 19: Wordle Fun

Word art is a very important element of scrapbooking.

Heather Goldsmith, the talented artist and journal-ist who writes A Creative Journal, blogged about Wordle in one of our Artsy Bloggers' Roundups.

Wordle describes itself as "a toy for generating ‘word clouds' from text that you provide.

The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. You can tweak your clouds with different fonts, layouts, and color schemes. The images you create with Wordle are yours to use however you like. You can print them out, or save them to the Wordle gallery to share with your friends."

Since Sunday, I have been getting very little work done. I've been glued to Wordle, trying out different word combos, backgrounds, color combos and fonts.

It's absolutely addictive. Thanks Heather! I think ...

Wednesday, August 20: The Girlfriend Cake

Girlfriend Cake digital scrapbooking layout

This is the wildest scrapbook layout I've ever done - no photos and lots of journaling about a very special bunch of ladies to whom I dedicate this LO.

After I finished it I realized the cake part would make a very cute birthday card. So I'll get more use out of my work!

The cake was created using Erica Hite's Layer Your Own Birthday Cake, which is a Scrap Simple product.

Scrap Simple products come in pieces like a puzzle.

All you do is clip your choice of paper onto each piece and then drag the decorated pieces onto your layout. Tip: if you hold the shift key down while you drag, the pieces will automatically align themselves.

My journaling says:

"The Girlfriend Cake
What a Great Recipe we Made!

Eileen - the batter, a bit bland but she always rose to the occasion.

Pam - the fruity filling and spice in the cake; she brought a wicked sense of humor to any gathering.

Barbara Ann - the decorations, always adding her special touch, rich (in love and kindness).

Suzie - the icing, sweet as sugar from the bottom of her heart.

Clipp - the sparklers on the cake, all glitz and glamour.

Lorraine - the beautiful cake plate who graciously brought all the parts together time and time again.

Pam is gone. Barbara and Clipp have moved away. But we all remain close in our hearts."

This layout was done in Adobe Photoshop. In addition to Erica's Assemble Your Own Birthday Cake and one of her papers, I used Scrap Girls products by Amanda Sok, Brandy Murry and Cheryl Barber, as well as a bunch of papers from the free Refresh2 Biggie.
