Stamped Window Envelope Card

How to stamp a sneak preview envelope card.

Cut a window in an envelope to give the addressee a little sneak preview!

My great-niece Karen is peeking through the window in the invitation above.

I wish you could see how cute she looks running along the beach with her younger brother, TJ, on her heels. You can see them both a bit better in Step 1 below.

The window cutout needs to be to the left of the envelope, allowing room for stamps and addressee information on the right.

This example uses a sun stamp to frame the window, but any chunky stamp with an area that can logically be cut away for the viewing window will work.

Window Envelope Materials

  • Photo to show through the window
  • Glue stick
  • Chunky stamp
  • Stamp ink
  • Scissors
  • Envelope
  • Card stock for the card
  • Card stock or full sheet self-stick label to stamp on
  • Mini cutting board or piece of cardboard which will fit into the envelope
  • Optional: Fiskars ShapeCutter

How to Assemble the Envelope

stamping supplies

1. Ink your stamp and stamp the card or self-stick label stock.

envelope and contents

2. Cut out the stamped shape. Decorate the envelope and create your card.

My example is a two-sided flat invitation with the photo on the front and the invitation on the back.

Take care that the part of the photo you want in the preview window will fit within the stamped shape frame.

The photo can cover the entire card, as mine does, or be made smaller and glued in place with the glue stick.

3. Place the invitation on top of the envelope to determine where the stamped window piece should be.

Affix the stamped cutout to the envelope front - either with the glue stick or by pealing off the backing paper from the label stock.

4. Slip a mini cutting board or piece of cardboard inside the envelope so you can cut the window from the stamped shape and envelope front without cutting through the back of the envelope. [ The mini cutting board is the green "thing" in the photo below. ]

5. Cut out the window using a craft knife or specialized cutting tool. I used a Fiskars ShapeCutterto cut out the sun's center.

6. Insert the card into the envelope so that the picture shows through the window. Seal, address, stamp and mail!

[ The photo below shows the reverse side of my card with the invitation details. ]
