Shhhh! - Secret Directions for Folies Girl Earrings

Folies Earrings

I'm fresh out of craft ideas to share with you right now, so I decided to give up a secret technique I developed quite a while ago. Whenever I sell any of these Folies Girl earrings, people want to know how they are made. All I would ever say is, "with my computer". The neat thing is I can make any design I (or the customers) want.

Materials for Folies Earrings

  • Clear plastic report cover
  • Clear full sheet computer label
  • Earwires
  • Jump rings

Tools Needed

  • Computer and printer
  • Computer graphic design or items to scan (if you have a scanner)
  • 2 pair of jewelers pliers
  • Large scissors

Directions for Folies Earrings

Find computer clipart that would look good as earrings. Be sure to honor any copyrights. If you're using the art work in a program you purchased, you can make a pair for yourself or as a gift; but you generally can't make them to sell.

I can sell the Folies Girls earrings because the graphics are in the public domain since they were created before 1923.

You can use photos you have taken or scan something for your design. Think pressed flowers, your family tartan or your own art work.

To learn more, read scanning tips.

Because earrings are small, you can fit 10 or 15 pair onto one 8 ½ by 11-inch sheet. Arrange your designs on a page in your graphics software.

I use Print Shop and Photoshop.

Print onto a clear label sheet.

Carefully strip off a bit of the backing and position the label sheet on top of a clear report cover.

Continue stripping away the backing and smoothing out any bubbles as you go. Cut out the earrings.

Use a stick pin to poke a hole in the top center of each earring.

Assemble each earring using two jump rings (so it will hang properly) and an earwire.

Thread a jump ring through the hole you made and close firmly. Open the second jump ring. Hang the earwire off one side and the earring jump ring off the other (be sure it will face the correct direction); close the second jump ring.

Here are directions for closing jump rings.
