Embossed Velvet Gift Bags

Elegant Gift Giving

Embossed Velvet Gift Bag

Gift Bag Supplies

  • ˝ to 1 yard of Rayon or Silk Velvet – depending on number and size of bags you will be making (Velvets made from acetate or nylon won't hold the embossed shape.)
  • Matching Thread
  • Sewing machine (You can also hand stitch or use fabric glue.)
  • Rubber Stamp (example is from Rubber Stamped, Star with a Swirl) – Michael’s Craft Store
  • Steam Iron
  • Spray Bottle filled with water
  • Beaded Fringe (enough to fit across the bottom of the bag)
  • 6-10” of Silver or Gold Cording
  • Silver or Gold Charms of your choice – example shows silver tone crosses
  • Holiday Gift Tag for each bag or make your own from card stock

How to Assemble the Gift Bag

Cut two pieces of velvet to desired size. Example is approximately 8” x 6”.

Emboss the velvet.

Note: you may need to trim away any excess rubber from the design on the stamp as I have done here. Do this around the entire design. This makes for a clean stamped impression.

rubber stamp

Emboss each piece separately to achieve desired look.

Preheat iron to the highest steam setting. Place stamp on ironing board. Lay velvet right side down atop stamp.

Spray fabric with water. Press down firmly with the iron and hold for 10 to 15 seconds.

Repeat until you have completed your pattern.

To add the beaded fringe at the bottom of the bag, cut a piece to fit across the end of the bag.

Laying the fringe binding along the bottom edge of one piece of fabric and the beading facing the top of the bag, hand stitch or using a zipper foot, machine stitch fringe in place.

adding fringe

Place the other piece of fabric face down, right sides together over the stitched fringe.

Making sure not to catch any of the fringe in the side seams, pin in place and then stitch the side seams and the bottom together.

If using a machine, a zipper foot works best for this project due to the bulk of the fringe.

Cut the bottom corners on a diagonal.

Turn the top hem inside about ˝” and stitch in place.

finished fringe

Carefully turn the bag right side out.

String a charm onto a piece of cording along with a gift tag.

Insert your gift and tie closed with a bow in the back.

finished gift bag

This is a nice way to wrap a gift that is being sent by mail as less packing is needed and also great for the kids to take a gift to the their teachers as they don’t have to deal with carrying boxes in their backpacks.

This entire craft can also be done by just gluing everything together and therefore the kids themselves could assemble this project once the embossing is done.

Be sure to use fabric glue that won’t leave the project too stiff and let the glue dry overnight before turning the bag right side out.

Happy Gifting.
