How to put original designs on glass in a permanent and food safe fashion.
I know you have an article on
Waterslide Decals and how to home cure them, but do you think this would work on wine glasses?
Thank you,
Kay
Nope. I tried that. The colors wash out terribly with heat curing.
On the other hand, the decal cured onto the glass with amazing strength.
I would like to remove it from this failed experiment, but I’ve found the cure is even dishwasher safe. LOL.
I can think of two options for getting your original designs onto wine glasses so that they are permanent and food safe: dye sublimation and glass etching.
Dye Sublimation Printing on Glass
If you want color in the design,
Dye Sublimation will do the job. Find a local printer who offers dye sublimation printing unless you want to make an investment in equipment and ink to DIY on a large scale.
Glass Etching
If you would like to etch designs onto the wine glasses, here is a video that explains the process.
It involves using a
Cricut personal electronic cutting machine to make stencils for glass etching.
Alternatively, you can use blue painter’s tape and small stickers (such as alpha stickers) as stencils for simpler designs, though this method does not easily allow cut-out look etched designs since you apply etching cream to the glass around the stickers and tape.
With the Martronics system, you can buy stencils or create your own reusable stencils on your computer, using a special ultra-violet Martronics stencil maker. This technology allows you to create more intricate designs in traditional etched glass fashion.
