Jewelry Making for Fun or Profit

Wire Sculpting is a Great Way to Get Into the Jewelry Business

August Peridot

Making jewelry starts as a hobby for most people.

There is an almost infinite amount of jewelry types to make. You can go from simple beads on string, to charms of various shapes and colors on solid silver or gold wire, to feathers made into unusual earrings.

Choices of beads, charms and gemstones abound. Almost every color of the rainbow is available and you, the designer can mix and match to make a unique piece no one else will ever have.

As more people notice and ask about your designs, you might consider selling them on the side - to your neighbors, friends and co-workers.

Jewelry sculpting is an excellent way to get into jewelry making, whether as a hobby or for profit. Using pliers and other simple tools you bend and shape silver or gold wire into designs as intricate as you desire.

You can add gemstone pendants or gold and silver charms. This is an ideal way to start a work at home craft business. The tools and materials needed are inexpensive and the finished product can be sold at a nice markup.

Basic techniques of wire sculpting include twisting, wrapping, crimping, scrolling and shaping. These skills are easy to learn and master.

What makes this kind of jewelry making attractive to many people is that you can make spectacular gold and silver pieces without the need to solder or use harsh chemicals.
