Landscaping Around an Old Safe

Landscaping Tips from The Artful Crafter?

I love your ideas.

So here goes: I have an old safe which is about the size of a small sink vanity. It was in my driveway when I moved into my home. It is way too heavy to move.

Any ideas on how to make it look like part of the landscape?

It sounds like you've somehow managed to move your heavy safe into the yard. If it's still sitting on the driveway, I can't think of a way to make it look like part of the landscape!

Hopefully it is on a flat stone or strong patio surface which can support and keep it level. If it's on the grass, my guess is it will sink a bit and lose its level with changes in the climate.

You could make a small seating area using the safe as an end table. Store candles, coasters, bugs spray, magazines, etc. inside. Place a hurricane or western style lamp on top and two rustic log chairs at an angle.

Is it high enough to form the base of a table with a glass top? If not, have a sturdy picture frame made in the dimensions of the top of the safe and thick enough to achieve the height you need. Affix it with silicone glue and use the frame as a display case before attaching the glass table top.

Keep the size of the glass in proportion to the safe so it will look "right" and remain stable. Be sure to put rubber bumpers between the frame and glass to protect the frame's finish and keep the glass from slipping. Your display case could be used for a butterfly or rock collection or even a collage of family mementos. You could change it with the seasons. Finally, the safe could be used to hold place mats, cutlery, napkins, etc.

One final idea would be to use the safe as part of an outdoor bar or grilling area. A bar fridge on one side and the safe on the other would allow you to lay a counter on top. Again, the safe would serve as storage protected from the elements.
