New Uses for Makit & Bakit Crystals

Makit Bakit Ornament

I have a lot of leftover Makit and Bakit crystals. Is there a way to fashion my own frames for them?

From what materials can I do this? Or is there an idea of another type of craft that I can use them for?

Christine

You can use many kitchen items as forms for the Makit & Bakit crystals. After cooling, simply pop the baked plastic out of the form.

They won’t have the pewter-like frames you get in the kits but you can edge them with gold or silver leaf. You could also glue metal foil tape, colored fun wire or even shimmery beads around the edge.

Or you could just leave your projects without an edge.

Makit & Bakit Christmas Ornaments

Materials

  • Makit & Bakit crystals
  • Aluminum Christmas cookie cutters
  • Cookie sheet
  • Round “widgets”

Instructions

By “widget” I mean something small and round that will withstand the 375 degree oven and form a hole to hang your ornaments. I have some wooden tube beads that would work. I could also find some round nuts and electronic bits in my DH’s tool box.

Preheat oven to 375. Lay cookie cutters on the cookie sheet. Place a widget toward the top of each shape. Pour the crystals for each ornament and smooth them to 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep.

Carefully move the cookie sheet to the oven and bake 15 to 20 minutes for a smooth finish or 10 to 15 minutes for a bumpy look. Just be sure the crystals have fused before removing from the oven.

Allow to cool 20 minutes before popping the ornaments out of the cookie cutters and pushing out the widget. Finish as desired.

Makit & Bakit Bowls and Vases

[This idea expands on one I found on the Quincrafts page of ArsaCrafts.com. Quincrafts makes Makit & Bakit kits as well as many other types of clever craft kits.]

Materials

  • Makit & Bakit crystals
  • Aluminum or silicone circular-bottomed container such as a pie plate or muffin tin
  • Cookie sheet
  • Empty aluminum cans (for the bowl or vase to melt over)
  • Aluminum foil

Instructions

Preheat oven to 375. Place circular form on cookie sheet. Pour in the crystals and smooth them to1/8 to 1/4 inch deep.

Carefully move the cookie sheet to the oven and bake 15 to 20 minutes for a smooth finish or 10 to 15 minutes for a bumpy look. Just be sure the crystals have fused before removing from the oven.

Allow to cool 20 minutes. Pop the disk out of the form.

Place empty aluminum can in the center of the cookie sheet. Cut a piece of aluminum foil slightly larger than the disk.

Center it on top of the can and shape it as you wish, flaring out from the can. Place the plastic disk on top and carefully move the cookie sheet back to the oven.

Check progress at three and five minutes. Do not bake longer than eight minutes. If your oven has a glass door, you can watch the bowl or vase form and remove it at the perfect point.

The bowl or vase may have a free form look which can be quite unique. It depends on how you shape the foil and how long you allow for the plastic disk to melt.

Remove from oven. Let cool 20 minutes before removing your project from the form.
