Out of Bounds Photos - OOB

Creating the OOB Digital Effect

Out-of-Bounds Photos Make Real Visual Impact

Scrap Girls can teach you how to create out-of-bounds photos.

If you don’t know what an out-of-bounds photo (OOB) is, don’t feel bad. I didn’t either until a couple of months ago.

Take a look at my scrapbook layout above and I’m sure you’ll get the idea.

My great nephew, T.J., appears to be popping through the background paper to snag some snacks without parental permission. Oops, he’s caught on film and the rest is literally (family) history.

Think about the pictures you have that could be taken to "The Outer Limits" with the OOB technique.

Your little prima ballerina leaping through air, your little leaguer winding up to throw the pitch of all times, kids swinging high on a swing set, kicking soccer balls or throwing snowballs.

It just occurred to me that Michalangelos’ painting of God reaching down from heaven to touch Adam’s finger and give life may well be the first famous application of the OOB technique.

Wow. So it’s a technique well-suited to the sublime as well as to the mundane.

Out of Bounds Photo - Class One

I’m halfway through a terrific Scrap Girls OOB Class taught by graphic designer/photographer Jene Parks.

My layout was done using Photoshop CS3 and graphic design products by the following Scrap Girls designers: Valerie Randall, Thao Cosgrove, Trish Yockum and Gillian Hurst.

In addition I’ve used two elements (the ribbon and the round pop-out frame) from Scrap Girls’ Christmas present to *me* last year, so I don’t know who the designers were and I want to take this opportunity to recognize them too. XOXO

I’ve taken several Scrap Girls online classes and have never been disappointed. I learn so much more with each one.

If you are intrigued by scrapbooking, digital design, photography or artistic design in general, I’m sure you would enjoy them too. :-D

Eileen I just love what you have done with this layout. I would love to talk to you about your technique. Great job.

I want to know how you used a separate frame instead of a simple stroke like we were taught in the Scrap Girls class.

My idea is to use a circle or something and flatten it so it looks like my dog is flying out of the frame. Don't know how to do that with a frame.

I'm off for a great long bike ride today, so no rush to answer.

I'm so flattered. Thank You. We don’t need to talk. I think you can get the idea from the screenshot above.

When Jene challenged us to use digital frames for the Out of Bounds technique rather than a stroke, I thought okay, that should be pretty easy. Then when I actually conceptualized my layout, I thought whoa ... how can I do that?

Anyway, I chose the frame first and figured the easiest way to get the main part of the photo to fit the frame would be to create an oval shape for a clipping mask.

But before clipping the photo to the oval shape, I made a copy of the photo so I could extract TJ’s hands and the snack bowl that would be OOB.

The screenshot shows the layers of the OOB Photo when I was finished: on top - OOB Hands; then the photo frame; and finally the photo of TJ clipped to the oval shape I had created to fit the frame.

If this isn’t clear, please write back.

Out of Bounds Photo - Class Two

I hardly ever had fun homework like this when I was a kid. This is my work from the second Out-of-Bounds Class.

In the first session, we learned how to create an OOB photo effect using a so-called destructive method.

We outlined the portions of the photo that would go beyond the frame and then copied them to new layers.

It’s kind of like creating a puzzle. Make a frame. Outline and copy the part of the photo that will be within the frame.

Then copy all the parts that will reach out of the frame and move them above the photo frame so the picture looks seamless.

Problem with a destructive method like this is that if you make your cuts and later decide you should have cut out more of the image, you have to start all over again. Just like with paper and scissors.

For the second class we learned a non-destructive method: using a layer mask.

When you put a mask over a photo and then work on the mask, you use a digital brush loaded with white to reveal the parts you want to see and black to conceal them. You can go back and forth - reveal ... oops, conceal ... no, don’t like that ... reveal again and so forth.

My layout was done using Photoshop CS3 and graphic design products by the following Scrap Girls designers: Angie Briggs, Brandy Hackman, Brandy Murry, Brandie Valenzuela, Erica Hite, Melissa Renfro, Mandy Steward and Paula Wright.

I made the lobster sticker embellishment using art from the PrintShop art gallery.
