Hand Painted Christmas Ornaments

Materials That are Safe for Children to Use

painted ornament

I like your idea article titled, Decorating Christmas Ornaments is Fun and Creates Memories.

If we wanted to do this on a large scale (lots of kids) would permanent markers work - to alleviate the drying time?

Or is there a quicker drying paint to use with the ornaments.

Sandra

Thank you. I’m glad you enjoyed the article.

You didn’t mention the kids’ age range.

One nice thing about Delta Air Dry Enamels, which I used for the ornaments in the article, is that they are non-toxic.

That’s also true of Sharpie Permanent markers. So permanent markers are a great idea also!

I did a little experimenting to see how regular Sharpie Permanent markers would work on ornaments.

On glass or plastic, they dry quickly and with a transparent stained glass look.

To make the design stand out, I felt I needed to outline with an opaque paint marker.

I used Sharpie Opaque Oil-Based Markers for the outline.

These markers are also good to paint ornaments by themselves. You get nice bold color.

They cover very well on either glass or plastic and dry quickly. They contain no xylene or other VOC’s, so are safe for children to use.

If you want a transparent stained glass look, use regular Sharpie Permanent markers; for opaque bolder colors, use Sharpie Opaque.

The 2008 ornament pictured above uses both as I said.

The “Happy Holly Days” one is done entirely with Sharpie Opaque.
