Here is a simple craft creation to make, but one that is popular with buyers.
The dimensions of the artwork above is as
follows:
Frame: 6 ½” x 6 ½” (16.25cm x 16.25cm), 1 ½” (3.8 cm) deep
Painted Tile: 2 ¼” x 2 ¼” (5.6cm x 5.6cm)
Of course you do not need to be tied down to these dimensions. Any standard plain bathroom tile would work.
This tile is hand painted in a primitive style. It is a charming look that doesn't require one to spend several years studying perspective and figure painting!
How to Make the Tile
Paint the tile with a design of your choice, using a paint such as DeltaPermEnamel Paint . This paint is especially designed to be used on glass or tile.
For a more durable finish if your painted tile will be used as a trivet or platter rather than wall art, brush on DeltaAir-Dry PermEnamel Clear Gloss Glaze. This air dry glaze will even make the painted tile dishwasher safe!
If you don't choose to paint the tile, you could apply a decal and seal it with the glaze, or even use decoupage methods, gluing on a picture with PVC glue (like Elmer's Glue-All) and varnishing it with a finish of Elmer’s or Mod Podge.
The frame itself is very crudely made, mirroring the primitive style of the painting, and simply stained. To get the same effect, the frame should be quite a bit bigger and deeper than the tile. Of course, to keep your expenses down, it would be best if you had some woodworking tools and experience. Or a friend who has them!
You can also start your craft project by looking for pre-made frames in suitable sizes and then use a tile to fit, rather than have to go the custom framing route.
Whether for your own home decorating or as an item to sell, these hand painted tiles are quite attractive and versatile.
