Paper for Hand Embossing Projects

Paper Weights for Hand Embossed Place Cards

I found your site for Hand Embossing Custom Printed Place Cards. I am going to try it for my daughter's wedding.

What paper did you use? Did you use a card stock?

I love the idea of being able to print the names on and then embossing to give it such a special look!

Thank you for your time.

Shirley

I used an ivory card stock weighing 225 grams per square meter. Read my tips on selecting paper for any craft project, as well as some sources for unique or custom cut papers.

Specifically with respect to papers for embossing, in general the less recycled stock the better. Fibers that have been processed repeatedly are shorter and weaker. The paper may crack and tear when embossed.

I have gotten good results hand embossing papers as light as 75 grams per square meter and as heavy as a 300 gram per square meter linen weave.

One caution: vellum paper is very popular for weddings but is tricky to emboss. Fine lines are OK. However if you want to emboss or deboss solid areas, you may not be pleased with the results. Vellum, when creased, changes color to a more opaque white. The solid areas would look like they were outlined with a white pencil. Not elegant!
