How to make beautiful artificial roses from coffee filters.
I read about these gorgeous handmade paper roses in Martha Stewart Living and went to the artist Cassie Chappell’s website, Mommy Makes Roses, to check them out.
Not only does Cassie make and sell the roses; she also offers classes and has a video tutorial as well as printable directions and the rose template right on her site. How sweet is that?
I decided to give them a try and am pretty pleased with my first attempt.
I made a couple of changes. I found it tricky to keep the stem wire in place as I positioned all the petals.
Plus I noticed that Cassie’s roses don’t appear to have pistils (female rose) or stamens (male roses).
So I glued a gold bead on the end of the stem wire to serve as an end cap and hold the wire in place as well as to simulate a pollen anther.
For the (green) leaves, I didn’t have any fancy textured paper like Cassie uses, so I made them from coffee filters just like the rose petals.
I cut the leaves using Kraft Edgers Mini Peaks craft scissors to create the serrated edges and painted them green (using paint at full strength).
Next I assembled the leaves per Cassie’s directions and used the same bamboo skewer (as was used to roll the rose petal edges) to inscribe veins radiating out from each leaf’s center.
