Popsicle Stick Pencil Holder

An Easy Economical Summer Fun Craft for Kids

pencil holder

As a mom of seven children, I often found myself looking for easy, economical crafts for summer vacation and rainy days. Over the years I've tried many.

Some became hits, and others were never done again.

Here is one of our all-time favorites. The cost is minimal, and it is very easy to make.

But the most important thing is to see your children explore and learn. I like making crafts that they will not throw away, but will want to use over and over again.

So, enjoy making memories with your children as you create these easy, economical crafts!

Popsicle Stick Pencil Holder

Ages 4 and Up

Pencil Holder Materials

  • 1 empty soup can
  • 24 craft or popsicles sticks
  • White glue
  • Paint (watercolors, tempura or acrylics)
  • Brushes

How to Make the Pencil Holder

1. Wash soup can thoroughly. Let dry

2. Glue sticks around the can. Let dry for about 3 hours before younger children start painting so that they don't dislodge any sticks as they do so.

3. After glue is dry, let the children paint to their imagination. Stripes, polka dots ... older children may want to paint a landscape or even their names.

4. Fill the holder with pens and pencils.

This is a craft project that will be used for years!

These pencil holders make wonderful gifts. The one pictured here was made by our daughter who gave it to her dad as a Father's Day gift when she was four years old. She is now 25!

Tip: To keep craft supplies organized, I have wood portable kitchen cart. They are inexpensive, but so useful and efficient. I place all my crafts in this cart, roll it to a corner of my dining room, and it is ever so handy when the kids want to make crafts. You also never have to go looking, because the crafts are in plain sight!
