How to Make Gemstone Jewelry

Gemstone Pendant Pattern

This is an example of the kind of jewelry you will can make once you learn wire sculpture techniques.

Wire Sculpting Supplies Required

  • 6 1/2" length of 18 gauge sterling silver dead soft round wire
  • 6 inches of 12 guage sterling silver half round wire
  • 14x7mm marquise sterling silver snapset
  • 14x7mm synthetic or genuine faceted stone

Tools Required

  • Flush cutter
  • Chain nose pliers
  • Round nose pliers
  • Flat nose pliers
  • Small Coiling Mandrel

Take your 6 1/2 inch strand of 18 gauge sterling silver wire and make two loops going in opposite directions.

Insert the top and bottom prongs on the snapset into the loops that were just made. Adjust and tighten the loops as necessary.

Bend the two end prongs down over the wire firmly with your pliers. Trim the prongs if necessary.

Squeeze in the side prongs on the snapset just a little bit to ensure a tight setting. Now press the stone into the setting until it snaps into place.

With you hands, shape a curl around the top and bottom of the stone. Bring the bottom wire up and the top wire down.

Lock the top and bottom wire in by tucking it under the loop and wrapping it around the loop. Trim off the excess wire and tighten the wire down over the loop with your pliers.

Your pendant should now look similar to the one pictured.

Take your 6 inch strand of 12 gauge sterling half round wire and wrap it tightly around a mandrel. The size of the mandrel is up to you, but the standard for this size pendant is 3/8 inch.

Slide the wrapped wire off of the mandrel and cut the loops one by one to make bails. Use one now, save the rest for later.

Put the bail on the pendant and tighten it up with your pliers.
