Homemade Polymer Clay Recipe

This Recipe Requires Experimentation

Homemade Polymer Clay

I tried one of the recipes on The Artful Crafter for making clay and used the baby oil etc. one. It's so gooey I can't work with it.

Can you tell what to do so I can work with it? Help please!

Sorry it's taken me a few days to get back to you. I had to do some experimenting.

I've made Fiona's Cold Porcelain Clay using mineral oil in place of Vaseline Oil, but not using baby oil.

Since you say you got a gooey mess, there are three possibilities:

  • 1. You didn't cook it long enough, i.e., "until dough forms and begins to come away from the sides".
  • 2. Ambient humidity is so high in your area that you need to adjust the recipe proportions slightly.
  • 3. The baby oil you used has lower viscosity than mineral oil or Vaseline Oil. Again, you would need to adjust the proportions a bit.

The humidity is high this time of year where I live; so I started with 1 T. of baby oil instead of 2 T. as called for in the recipe. I could see that the mix would be too dry when I stirred it all in the pan. So I added a scant ½ T. more.

You can see in the attached photos that a ball formed at about 6 ½ minutes.

The cold porcelain clay needs a lot of conditioning - either by hand or with a pasta machine. I molded some tribal head pendants using Amaco Designer Push Molds and rolled some clay beads using Amaco Tri-Bead Rollerfor this experiment.

I hope this helps.
