Here’s a beginner’s version of the woven ribbon fish.
Due to reader requests, I’ve designed a simpler (but smaller) version of the Woven Ribbon Fish. If you’re right handed, your left hand forms a sort of loom, making this fish quite easy and quick to make.
If you’re left handed, make your right hand the loom.
1. Cut 2 10-inch strips of ½ to 1-inch wide ribbon.
2. Form one strip around the first two fingers of your left hand to resemble a capital M.
3. Weave the second strip under the right slanted leg of the M as shown.
4. Bring the same strip around the back and through/between the slanted and upright right legs of the M.
5. Next curl the same strip toward you and, working upward, weave it back over the right slanted M leg and between the left slanted and uprights legs. You now have three of the four fins pointing left as shown above.
6. Take the last fin strip from the right and weave it to the back, pulling it all the way, so that you can see four fins pointing left.
7. Refer to the finished photo at the top to shape the fish. Pinch the fish nose to hold its shape. Glue or staple the back fins together where they cross.
8. Take scissors and, referring to the finished photo, trim the fins.
These little ribbon fish make cute mobiles or Christmas ornaments. You can also flatten them a bit more to use on handmade cards or scrapbook pages.
