How to Weave Ribbon Fish

Where to Find Instructions for Weaving a Ribbon Fish

I am trying to find directions for making woven fish out of ribbon to make a mobile.

I used to make these, but have forgotten how and it is driving me nuts. Any help would be appreciated.

You weave the ribbon on your fingers is all I can remember.

We used to have a link on our site to illustrated directions for the woven fish; but the other site no longer exists. So I thought, what the heck, I'll figure it out myself and put it on our own site. That way I can be sure it will always be there.

I had no idea what I had gotten myself into. I completely understand how it could drive one nuts.

But once I accepted the challenge, I couldn't give up!

Here is my version of ribbon woven fish. (If weaving fish is like riding a bicycle and it all comes back to you, I would appreciate any suggestions or corrections you have!)

By the way, this type of weaving is often done with dried palm fronds, reeds or straw. You see decoratively woven palms frequently at Easter time.

In addition, there is a village in México - Tzintzuntzán ("Place of the Hummingbirds" just like the name sounds) in the state of Michoacán) that specializes in straw and palm weaving. If you ever have a chance to visit, you will be amazed at the variety of designs and critters that can be woven with this technique - every imaginable type of animal, plus angels, crosses, intricately woven stars and wreaths.

Things I Learned Doing This Project

  • 1. Sometimes you need to go backwards when you want to go forward (in weaving, as well as in life).
  • 2. A challenge well-met is not as satisfying as I thought it would be.
  • 3. Ribbon weaving is not my craft of choice!

Thank you sooo much.! I just printed it out and will go get some ribbon and will try it out.

It is not the same directions that I remember but it is the same identical weave. I will let you know how it works and if I can remember my version...which is just done by looping around your hand and fingers.
