I am considering using this method when making my wedding invitations. You made it sound very "doable."
I am curious about the Fiskars ShapeBoss. It sounds great, but I am wondering if you can only use their stencils or if I can use other brands as well.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ramey
Fiskars ShapeBoss is pretty flexible. You can use it with Fiskars embossing stencils, as well as their shape cutter stencils and cutting mat.
I’ve even done deep embossing by stacking several Fiskars stencils (Read my article on deep debossing to find out more.)
There are two ways you could use other manufacturers’ stencils with the ShapeBoss. If the stencils have enough uncut margin, you can punch your own holes to secure them to the ShapeBoss work surface with the supplied pegs. If not, you can secure them using tape.
Method 1: A La Fiskars
The really neat thing about the Fiskars ShapeBoss embossing system is that it allows you to precisely line up two stencils with the paper to be embossed between them. The top stencil is used to guide your stylus; the bottom one allows the paper to give and form the embossed design. It’s pretty foolproof. To use non-Fiskars stencil sheets, just buy two and do the same thing.
Method 2: Blind Embossing
If you don’t want to purchase two of every stencil, you can blind emboss using your ShapeBoss. Secure (either with pegs or tape) the stencil sheet to the work surface. Position your paper on top. Use your finger to find the design you want to emboss and trace it with your stylus.
Blind embossing is a bit tricky and makes you appreciate those clever Fiskars folks even more!
