Felted Soap
For Gentle Exfoliating

Felted Soap
How to turn wool into geometric felt patterns for a lovely exfoliating bar of soap.
First let me tell you what felted soap is.
In short, it is a bar of soap covered with wool roving.
A felted bar of soap works as a body scrub for gentle exfoliating.
Wool roving is yarn that has been drawn out and slightly twisted in preparation for spinning.
The felting process shrinks and sticks the wool onto the surface with nothing more than water. Other items can be felted as well; but that’s a topic for other tutorials!
It is easy and fun to make these colorful little gifts. I put mine in a cellophane bag tied with a bow for gifting.
Felted Soap Materials
- 1 oz. Wool Roving or enough to completely cover a bar of soap – Merino wool is recommended for this project.
- 1 bar of soap, any size or scent – Glycerin or Castile are nice but any good lathering soap will do
- A pan or sink of very warm water
- Rubber gloves – optional
Some good sources for Wool Merino Roving are Weir Dolls and Crafts, Mielkes Farm and Maple Splendor.
Instructions
To do justice to this fun craft project, I am referring you to the complete illustrated instructions at
Mielkes Farm.
The only things I did differently were to wear rubber gloves and alternate the hot water with cold water to speed up the felting process.
I also did not use a wash board or scrubbing surface, just the rubber gloves.
My example below shows a bar of soap before felting has begun (left) and the felted bar after drying on the right.
Notice the bulky look before the wool has begun to shrink down and felt.
Have fun choosing different color combinations and geometric designs.
