Vitreous Glass
What is Vitreous Glass?
Can you help me find vitreous glass???? Am I spelling it correctly???
Thank you.
P
"Vitreous" is from the Latin "vitreus" meaning glassy.
Webster defines it as an adjective: 1. "consisting of, or resembling, glass; glassy, as vitreous rocks"; and 2. "Of or pertaining to glass; derived from glass; as vitreous electricity."
You don't find the word "vitreous" used much to describe glass anymore, except in the world of mosaics.
Mosaic vitreous glass tiles are thin, small, square tiles. One side is ridged to provide a good grip for the adhesive. The other side is smooth. Vitreous glass is durable, suitable for outdoor use and provides a smooth finished surface.
If you are looking for larger pieces of vitreous glass, go to a glass supply or construction supply company.
The advantages vitreous glass provides in mosaic work also make it a good material for cladding and decorating buildings. Just don't use the "V" word. Ask for opaque glass as is used for shower doors and bathroom windows.
