Wine Bag Assembly

Tips for Putting Together a Wine Bag

I was looking at your pattern for holiday wine gift bag and I'm having trouble understanding.

When do I sew up the sides? And which way am I turning the fabric to square the bottom?

It's hard to see in the photo how that part works.

(I'm a beginner at this!)

I wish I could come over and show you. It would take us about 10 minutes! The wine gift bag is really easy to make.

Maybe it will help if I break the project down for you.

  • 1. Cut the long strip of fabric;
  • 2. Fold it in half right sides facing (now it looks about the height of the finished bag);
  • 3. Sew the side seams;*
  • 4. Square the bottom**
  • 5. Turn the bag right side out;
  • 6. Hem the top.
Squaring Corner

* If you want to sew the tie on in this step (and kill two birds with one stone), follow Step #2 of the original article. For a beginner it may be easier to sew the tie on at the very end, making that step 7 in the list above.

** Squaring the bottom is optional. Look at these pretty Organza Wine Gift Bags where the fabric is allowed to flow out at the bottom.

If you prefer the square bottom (with the bag still inside out after sewing the side seams), grasp the bottom end of one seam. Hold the bag upside down with the seam facing you.

The point you are holding will be the 90 degree angle of the right triangle and the seam will bisect the right triangle.

Use both hands to pull the two sides into a triangle shape, pin and stitch.

I hope this helps.
