Wood Slats
Uses for Left Over Wood Slats
I have extra slats from wooden mini blinds that we hung in our office.
Is there a craft idea that I could put these to use? I hate to just throw them away. Do you have a suggestion?
Thanks
Christina
I once bought some inexpensive bamboo roll-up shades and took them apart to use the slats for place mats and table runners. With the heavier wood from your mini blinds, you could also make trivets.
Cut the wood slats to size and sand any rough edges. Choose a twine or cord to coordinate. Crochet or macramé thread would do nicely. Cut two pieces roughly three times the length of your project.
So that your finished product can be rolled up for storage, one thread should be laid on top and the other woven around each slat, then around the top thread, then back under, around and up. This means the bottom thread needs to be significantly longer than the top and that the top thread should be held taut.
When you've finished weaving the wood slats together, hide the finishing knots as best you can and secure them with a drop of Elmer's glue. Secure the opposite side's threads as well (the side where you started weaving) to keep the threads from sliding out of alignment.
Your wood slats might also make very nice serving trays. Find a wooden picture frame in the proper size. Form the bottom using your slats. A nice finishing touch would be to attach fancy drawer handles to the top for easy carrying.
