Murder Mystery Dinner Party: A How To Guide

Murder Mystery Dinner Party: A How To Guide

Many of us grew up hearing the stories of the great fictional detectives. Sherlock Holmes. Poirot. Lupin. There is something about unraveling a murder mystery that is just so compelling. It is no wonder that detective fiction is still one of the most popular genres out there.

But sometimes reading these stories isn’t enough. We often want to experience them! To have the chance to be part of one of these larger than life mysteries. Which is where a murder mystery dinner party comes into play! These nights are the perfect way to safely live out your detective fantasies while also hosting an amazing night of fun and suspense for your friends.

San Francisco is a city known for its party culture. So you will want to go all out when hosting a murder mystery dinner party here. These parties do take a lot more work than a regular dinner party. But it is well worth the effort. So stick with us as we explain to you how to host the perfect murder mystery evening!

Decide On A Theme

The best murder mysteries are ones that are rich in atmosphere. So the first step in planning your evening is deciding on a theme. Where will your murder mystery take place? Will it be in a casino on the Vegas strip? Or perhaps in a 50’s speakeasy? Maybe you will travel further back in time to the Victorian era.

You will want to pick a theme that offers easy costume opportunities for your guests. The 50’s is a solid era to pick as there are plenty of amazing costumes out there for your guests to choose from. You will then want to secure thematic decorations for your chosen theme. Maybe rent out a roulette table if you’ve gone for a casino theme. Or host the party by candle light if you have selected a Victorian theme.

Characters And Costumes

The next step is crafting the characters. Each of your guests will adopt a new persona for the evening. A player on the stage of your murder mystery. You want to make these characters larger than life. Each with their own motivations, backstories, desires, and quirks. You want to give your guests something to really dig their teeth into. Try to avoid making any two characters too similar. Each of your guests will want to feel that their character is unique.

If you really want to make the characters stand out you should consider providing the costumes yourself. This will allow you to have a greater level of control over the characters while also taking a lot of the pressure off your guests.

Charity shops or thrift shops are often the best place to source good costumes for a murder mystery evening. I highly recommend taking all the costumes you find to a company like We Wash24, one of SF’s best wash and fold laundry companies, to ensure they are properly clean and ready for your guests.

Craft A Narrative

The easiest way to plan a murder mystery is to work backwards. Imagine the case has already been solved. Which one of your characters is the killer? From that point you will need to work backwards to craft the mystery. What was their motivation? Greed? Revenge? Love?

Once you know their motivation you need to figure out how they committed the crime. Perhaps they poisoned the victim’s drink. Or maybe they stabbed them when the lights went out. After that you will need to think of a series of clues that can be revealed throughout the evening. This will include both physical clues and spoken ones.

Create Information Cards

Each of your guests will need to have a series of information cards. These will tell them everything about their characters along with a series of clues and tidbits of information for them to reveal throughout the night in conversation.

For the killer, whoever they are, you will need to ensure their cards contain all the information regarding the murder and their motivation for committing it. Make sure to give them subtle vocal clues to give out during the evening. You don’t want to make it too obvious that they are the killer. But at the same time you don’t want to make the mystery impossible to solve for the other guests.

Plan Your Menu

You can’t forget that this is also a dinner party at the same time. So you will need to craft a menu that compliments the evening. Try to cook food that is relevant to your chosen theme. I always prefer doing small nibbles as opposed to a sit down dinner. Thematic cocktails are also a great idea for an evening such as this. If you have selected a 50’s theme you could serve up Tom Collins or Martinis.

Celebrity Fashion Tips: How To Achieve That Star Look

Celebrity Fashion Tips: How To Achieve That Star Look

One of my favorite times of the year is the Oscars. Not because I’m a massive film fan. But because I love seeing what the celebrities are wearing! And once the dust has settled and new movies have been released it is often only the outfits that people remember from the Oscars.

Celebrities play a huge role in the fashion industry. They often dictate what is fashionable. From the elegant to the extravagant. I’m sure we have all at one point in our lives dreamed of being on the red carpet getting to show off our amazing outfits! Well the good news is that you can achieve that star look without too much effort. This guide will walk you through all the steps you need to follow to achieve that celebrity style!

Designer Brands

All celebrities on the red carpet will get asked the same question about their outfit, ‘who are you wearing tonight?’ This is their chance to show off their designer label. So the first step in achieving your celebrity look is by securing a few designer items of your own.

But this doesn’t have to be the biggest, most expensive brands either. There are plenty of reasonably priced designer firms who offer amazing items. Lacoste, Tory Burch, Ted Baker. Just to name a few. And your entire outfit doesn’t need to be designer either. As long as the non-designer parts of your outfit work to complement the designer parts.

Hair And Skincare

One of the most important parts of looking like a celebrity is ensuring you are properly looking after your hair and skin. You won’t see anyone on the red carpet with a hair out of place or with oily skin. To that end you need to first establish what hair and skin type you have. This will allow you to construct a more rigorous and healthy skin and hair care routine.

You will also want to start shifting towards products that use natural ingredients. Celebrities always use the best stuff. So you should too. Batana oil is one such product that a lot of celebs and influencers have started using. It acts as a natural moisturizer for both skin and scalp while also helping promote healthy hair growth. Batana oil is extracted from the American pine tree so there are plenty of places where you can get batana oil here in the USA.

You should also look at using makeup that contains more natural ingredients. A lot of the cheaper makeup products on the market can cause a number of skin problems such as acne, cracking, dry skin, and rashes.

Wear It With Confidence

Putting together a winning outfit is only the first step in achieving that star look. The reason celebrities look so good on the red carpet is because they wear their outfits with confidence. To that end you need to practice a bit of self-love while also working on maintaining a healthy posture. Posture plays a huge part in making an outfit look good. It will make you look more confident and helps highlight the outfit in its entirety.

A good exercise is to spend some time modeling your outfits in front of your mirror. Don’t just examine how they look but practice different poses and walks. Really strut your stuff. This will help you build up your confidence levels and let you get a better feel for the outfit at the same time.

Work Out

A lot of celebrities are lucky enough to have the time and the means to work with personal trainers to achieve their fitness goals. And it is through their rigorous workout regimes that they are able to look so good. So, if you really want that star look, you need to start working out too.

Running is one of the best exercises if you want to build up your stamina while also toning your legs and glutes. And it has a profound effect on your mental health as well. You will also want to start hitting the gym regularly too. To begin with you should focus on building up your strength, as opposed to building muscle mass. This will improve your energy levels and make your future workout sessions a lot smoother. Once you’ve done that you can start working on building muscles.

Life On Set: What It’s Like Working For A Studio

Life On Set: What It's Like Working For A Studio

I’m sure we have all dreamed about being on the silver screen at one point or another. To step into the glitz and glamor of the entertainment industry and become a star! Sadly, making it big as an actor isn’t easy. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still play a hand in producing the TV shows and movies we all love. Canada is home to a number of incredible production studios. And many of its cities are often used as filming backdrops too.

But what is it like working for a studio? There is no question that it is a drastically different kind of career when compared to more traditional jobs. But there are a lot of aspects of studio life that are often overlooked. We have put together this guide to provide an insight of what it’s like working for a studio. Hopefully it will help you see if it is the right kind of work for you!

Late Nights And Early Mornings

Filming is not a 9 to 5 kind of situation. The vast majority of scenes shot outside will have to be done at a specific time of day. And often over several days to ensure the studio gets all the shots they need. This means your hours won’t always be consistent. And it is very likely you could be in for some extremely early starts or late finishes.

Ample Opportunities

It is often said that it takes a village to raise a child. And this saying can be applied to a production studio. The amount of people it takes to create a TV show or a movie is staggering. Which means that production studios have a wide array of job opportunities available.

Whether you’re looking to help build the sets or design the costumes. Maybe you want to be a script supervisor or a sound technician. Or maybe you are perfectly content to fetch the coffees and manage the administrative side of things. There is a job for every skill set in the entertainment industry. So even if you’re not creatively inclined you can still find a role that best suits you.

Time Is Money

A very popular phrase used on production sets is ‘Time Is Money.’ This is true for most businesses but is especially true for production studios. The budget for modern movies and TV shows often nears the millions. So falling behind schedule is a very costly issue. Studios will do everything they can to avoid this where possible.

To that end production studios take time keeping extremely seriously. So you need to ensure you are always on time and always focused. Because, unlike a lot of other jobs, you won’t be able to take your work home with you to finish later.

Physical Risks

Working on set or on location is a magical experience. But it is also one that is filled with risks. Working with a lot of technology presents a number of risks. Falling lights, trip hazards, burns, electrocutions, stunt accidents.

The chances are slim but not impossible. The number of personal injury settlements in Calgary and other cities due to on-set accidents is small, but not low enough to not be a consideration. So if you’re looking for a risk free work environment, a studio won’t be the one for you. But if you can handle a little risk then you’ll feel right at home.

A Sense Of Community

Working in entertainment is extremely rewarding. Both financially and socially. Production studios, while meticulous and busy, are also extremely social and lively. The sense of community you will find present in this industry is astounding. The long grueling hours and busy schedules forces you to become bonded with your coworkers quite quickly.

Working for a studio is also the perfect place for networking. Production studios will work with a large number of celebrities, businesses, and private contractors. As you progress through your career you will have the chance to build powerful business connections that will help you advance your career. Make sure to seize every opportunity provided to you.

The Magic Of Movies

Working for a production studio is a lot of hard work. But there is nothing more amazing than seeing the magic of movies being made first hand. There is nothing quite like it. Seeing the amazing sets and stunning costumes close up. Watching as the final product takes shape. Seeing all the bloopers happen in real time and being privy to all the filming secrets and tricks.

Inside Hollywood: The Day To Day Life On A Movie Studio

Inside Hollywood: The Day To Day Life On A Movie Studio

In the movie industry, you might seem all glitter in glory, but the reality is that a lot of work goes into making movies and your favorite form of entertainment. From grips to production assistants there are a lot of people working on studio sets every day and while their tasks are somewhat different the experience of working on a movie set is similar for everyone. If you’ve never set foot on a movie set on a studio lot you might be interested to find out what a day working at a movie studio looks like. Let’s jump into it and try to go through a typical day on a movie studio lot.

First and foremost, it’s important to understand that when you work on a movie set, you must be ready for your day. While many people think that actors and people who work in the movie industry have it easy, they can be very long and grueling days. This is why most people who work in the movie industry try to make sure that they get up early and work in the best of conditions considering that some of these can last from 10 to over 12 hours long. When you arrive how long your day is determined by what we call a call sheet. Because she tells everybody what their task is for today in when they should arrive.

So, when people first arrive on set the thing that they need to do is follow the call sheet for their task and usually, this task will be related to preparing for the very first shot that needs to be filmed for the date. This means that by the time the very first person arrives and the last person on the call sheet arrives everything needs to be done and ready for filming to begin. One thing that many people seem to underestimate is how much of the team effort making movies is. While the director is the lead, and the actors are very important nothing happens unless the boom mic operator is on set doing his job and the lighting crew is all set and ready for the scene.

Once everything is ready and set up to begin filming you will see that there is no time where someone isn’t busy. Even though a lot of people might not be doing anything while the cameras rolling everybody is still ready for the next task that comes after the take is chosen and selected as the good one. It’s important to realize that a lot of people who work on sets never do anything without asking since you never know what decision was made by which department. Once the camera turns off everybody on the team starts working towards setting up the next shot sometimes this means moving all the cameras around changing the lighting or simply completely moving from the studio to another set.

Depending on the scale of the movie you’re working on, or the studio budget certain films will benefit from having their own sets stay up all the time but other times you will have to move out things for the day as other teams might be filming at other times in the same location. This means that when it comes to packing up lighting and props for example there is a lot of back and forth between the actual set and the storage units present on the studio lot. Thankfully for many teams, it’s very easy to find what prop in what necessary equipment belongs to what set, thanks to proper inventory keeping and storage facility automation.

Depending on the length of the film and the availability of the actors and the director sometimes filming can go for a few months to almost a year. It’s important to keep in mind that a lot of the reason why the studio work is so scheduled and has so few breaks is because every second you spend on the studio lot costs money to the studio as well as the team making the movie. The faster you can wrap up a shoot the less money it costs to make and the easier it is for studios to make up the budget and eventually make actual profit on the final product.
